Decision

Recap:
Transplanted Filipino fighter Nonito Donaire captured the vacant NABF super flyweight title by scoring a hard fought 10-round split decision over Kahren Harutyunyan.

Donaire dropped the Armenian born Harutyunyan in the second round and then withstood a late challenge from the boxer who now fights out of Glendale, California, to nail down the victory. Donaire also had to overcome a damaged left hand that he injured early in the bout. Nevertheless, he was able to land enough clean shots to easily post the win on two of the three judges' scorecards.

Both judges Jose Cobian and David Denkin had Donaire the clear winner 97-92, while Tony Castellano scored the contest 95-94, for the former amateur star Harutyunyan.

Despite nursing a bad hand Donaire was happy about posting his 13 straight win since losing his second pro fight almost five years ago.

"It is the same kind of cartilage injury I suffered in my last fight," Donaire said after the victory. "I was in a lot of pain, especially after the seventh round. It made for me being off balance for a lot of the fight. I couldn't use my left hand as much as I wanted, but I knew I had to keep trying to use it and fight through the pain. I give Kahren a lot of credit. He is a really nice guy and fought his heart out. But I definitely thought I won the fight."

Harutyunyan spent much of the night on the business end of Donaire's punches and clearly struggled against a fighter with superior reach and firepower. Despite the second round knockdown, Harutyunyan still felt that he had done enough down the stretch to earn the decision.

"I am not going to say anything against the judges," Harutyunyan confided after the loss. "I don't know how it looked from the side of the ring. But I felt I did my best and came back strong. I know I won the 10th round big. I thought I boxed well and was aggressive when I had to be. I thought I did enough."
